Meditation Apps Vs Traditional Meditation

Meditation apps have gained a lot of popularity in recent years, but I have my doubts as to whether it is true meditation, or a kind of entertainment. Yes they help you to relax, but so does watching TV or reading.

Meditation is supposed to be about awareness and self-understanding – recognising how pointless many of your thoughts are, and how much anxiety they cause, and so allowing the mind to quieten naturally. Surely you need to be sitting with only yourself and your thoughts, not with a soothing voice and the sounds of rainfall, for this to happen most effectively.
